By no stretch of the imagination would anyone consider me a farm girl, though I once owned a pair of overalls in the 90s. But my father has always kept a garden, and many summer evenings during my childhood were spent watching him work and occasionally plucking a tomato hornworm off a plant for a dime. I loved the smell of wet soil and his neat rows of corn.
He definitely has a green thumb. Those sweet moments in the garden with my dad taught me that a “green thumb” is actually attunement to growing things: nurturing a plant through the various stages of growth, continually pulling out those threatening weeds, and eventually letting that little plant do what it does best, which is produce fruit!
So essentially, my dad is a plant therapist.
The Farmer’s Almanac is a reference book that contains weather forecasts, tide tables, planting charts, and articles on many interesting topics, including baking, health, and of course gardening. It is part science, part art, part entertainment, and most definitely useful in cultivating a green thumb.
That is exactly what I want my blog to be like. Well, but more about human behavior, less about plant behavior.
